Description
The Saucony Kinvara 16 looks like it may be the last of its line. A great shoe that shook up the market when it came out and delighted many runners looking for a simple shoe with good materials and a "lowish" drop. Some even set half marathon personal bests in it. In theory it sits in an odd spot between a daily trainer like the Ride 19 and a lightweight trainer like the Endorphin Speed 5, but in practice it does not find its market.
The mesh upper is breathable and light, with a snug fit that wraps the foot without pressure points, mainly thanks to the straps that hug the foot from the sides and end in eyelets. The construction is minimalist, designed to cut weight while keeping just enough durability for daily wear, with a heel counter that adds some stiffness. The toe box is tight, so it is not recommended for wide feet.
The midsole uses the latest evolution of PWRRUN, but the compound seems to fall behind the newer technologies. The drop is low (the classic 4 mm that has defined the whole line), with a geometry aimed at quick transitions for midfoot and forefoot strikers. The rubber outsole covers strategic areas for reliable traction on asphalt, with a pattern that eases smooth transitions. It is a versatile everyday shoe, ideal for runners who put lightness and simplicity ahead of maximum cushioning, but it does not seem to match other shoes on the current market in responsiveness. Will there be another Kinvara, or will Saucony retire this legendary line?
