Nike Air Zoom Pegasus 42

The Nike Air Zoom Pegasus 42 continues the most versatile daily training series on the market. At around 275 g (EU 42), it keeps the all-round spirit of the Pegasus while adding ReactX foam, which offers 13% more energy return than the traditional React. Hard to notice day to day, but there it is. Its 10 mm heel-to-toe drop (38 mm heel / 28 mm forefoot) and dual Zoom Air units provide good cushioning without feeling mushy. Like rivals such as the Ride 18 or the Cumulus 27, the Pegasus 42 stands out for its versatility, and in the end the choice is very personal: colourways, brand loyalty and small details tip the balance one way or the other. The launch price is in line with expectations, making it a good option for daily training and an everyday shoe for runners without big ambitions, although keep an eye on deals that can turn it into a bargain, always welcome in a shoe rotation if the wardrobe (and the wallet) allow it.

Compared with the Pegasus 41, the changes are evolutionary, except for the price, which always goes up. The mesh upper offers good breathability with strategic ventilation zones, nothing to write home about. The traditional lacing is complemented by a more padded tongue that reduces pressure on the instep, although that depends on how tightly you tie your laces. The heel has an internal heel counter that provides a better lockdown without sacrificing comfort.

The ReactX midsole with Zoom Air units in the forefoot and heel offers a balanced combination of cushioning and responsiveness. The rubber outsole with its waffle pattern provides multidirectional traction that does the job, nothing more. Perfect for daily training, moderate paces and runners looking for a do-it-all shoe. No shoe will make you run faster on its own, but the Pegasus 42 is a choice that will hardly disappoint, even if it does not make you fall in love.
