On Running Cloudrunner 3

The On Running Cloudrunner 3 is the Swiss brand's light-stability daily trainer, designed for runners who tend to overpronate but do not want a traditional motion-control shoe. It is the simple option in the Cloudrunner family, which also includes the Cloudrunner 3 Max with more cushioning for long runs, and it comes in a wide fit for those who need it. Its territory is easy runs and steady base miles rather than speed, although many will end up wearing it for walking and everyday use too: such is the power of fashion.

Compared with the Cloudrunner 2, the biggest change is obvious at a glance: the Clouds (the cut-outs in the midsole) are smaller and more angular, the base is wider, the midsole sidewalls are higher to cradle the foot and the heel has a more pronounced rocker. The technical mesh upper is cleaner and more breathable, with plenty of padding at the heel and tongue, suede overlays on the eyelets (yes, everyone has wondered what happens when they get wet) and an asymmetric plastic clip at the back that holds the foot without making itself felt. The fit is true to size, with room up front without being wide, although with so much padding it is hard to find the right lacing tension. The rubber outsole now covers the whole sole (previously the centre was left exposed), and it shows in grip and durability.

The Helion™ foam midsole with the CloudTec® system gives a firm, stable ride, more about control than bounce: it absorbs impact well but returns little energy, and it holds you back a little when you try to pick up the pace. With a 31 mm heel stack height and an 8 mm heel-to-toe drop, the profile is moderate by today's standards, and the flat forefoot rocker makes for a smooth, predictable transition. Ideal for mild overpronators looking for a comfortable, stable and durable shoe for easy-paced running who also want to be on trend.
