Description
The Nike Zoom Fly 6 marks the definitive return of Nike to the super shoe race. With a redesigned midsole made entirely of ZoomX (the same foam as in the Vaporfly 3 and Alphafly 3), a full-length FlyPlate carbon fibre plate and an SR-02 base for stability, this sixth edition is the most advanced Nike running shoe to date. The two-layer woven mesh upper offers a sock-like fit, while the new outsole with a light rubber pattern improves traction without adding weight. Ideal for steady runs, long runs and marathon-pace efforts, the Zoom Fly 6 is the ultimate hybrid between training and racing.
Compared with its predecessor, the Zoom Fly 5, the changes are profound. The midsole drops the recycled ZoomX foam for a full layer of pure ZoomX, with the FlyPlate between the ZoomX and the SR-02 base. The result is a more consistent and responsive ride, with more energy return on every stride. The upper is completely redesigned with a two-layer woven mesh system that gives a snugger, more breathable fit, although it may feel narrow for wide feet. With 42 mm at the heel and 34 mm at the forefoot (an 8 mm heel-to-toe drop, in case the subtraction got stuck), it has the tallest midsole of any Nike running shoe to date; watch out for race approval, as some runners have already been disqualified. Against rivals such as the Asics Superblast 3, the Zoom Fly 6 offers a more race-oriented feel thanks to the carbon plate; compared with the Hoka Mach 7, it gains responsiveness but gives up some versatility at easy paces.
On the run, the Zoom Fly 6 shines at fast paces and on long runs with pace changes. The combination of ZoomX and FlyPlate provides a noticeable push that invites you to pick up the pace without much effort. It is not a shoe for recovery runs, as its firm and responsive character does not suit very easy paces, but as a tool for quality workouts, long intervals and marathon pace, it is exceptional. The rocker geometry is pronounced, making for smooth heel-to-toe transitions. Outsole durability is adequate, with rubber placed strategically in high-wear areas so that the investment does not go down the drain after the first run. For anyone looking for something more radical in the Nike range, the Streakfly 2 is a good option.
