Description
The Nike Alphafly 3 is the ultimate Nike weapon for the marathon and long distances. After previous editions that saw world records, this third version refines the formula with a more accessible ZoomX midsole and a more comfortable upper fit. The combination of ZoomX + Flyplate carbon plate + two Air Zoom units in the forefoot generates unrivalled propulsion when the pods are loaded correctly. With 39 mm at the heel and 32 mm at the forefoot (7 mm drop, in case anyone was wondering), it offers maximum cushioning within the World Athletics limit. It is one thing for them to be approved by the international federation and another that they are an external aid that boosts performance, which is pretty much the definition of doping. But hey, we are not here to judge anyone. Ideal for the marathon, the half marathon and runners looking for maximum performance over long distances.
The key evolution is a more accessible ride. The ZoomX midsole keeps its exceptional energy return (they practically run by themselves), but now with a smoother transition from the heel to the Air Zoom units. The Atomknit upper is extremely light (so much so that brushing it too hard makes you think it will tear) and breathable, with a low-volume fit that keeps things clean. Compared with the Nike Vaporfly 4, it gains in cushioning and propulsion but loses some versatility for shorter distances; against rivals such as the Adidas Adizero Adios Pro 4, it offers more cushioning but is less stable on bends.
On the run, the Alphafly 3 shines at marathon pace and on long efforts. The combination of ZoomX, Flyplate and Air Zoom units generates such a mechanical boost that it saves energy over long distances, a key element for squeezing out those seconds that make the difference at the highest level. For ordinary people, the first focus should be on training more and losing weight to improve performance. Those who have tried it point out that it has a learning curve: you need a specific footstrike pattern (midfoot or forefoot) to get the most out of it. It is not recommended for easy paces or races with many bends, as the height and the "pods" make it unstable on turns. Durability is limited to 50–80 km, typical of racing shoes. In other words, a truly unbeatable durability-to-price ratio. Compared with the Saucony Endorphin Pro 5, it gains in cushioning and propulsion but gives up stability and versatility.
