Description
The Merrell Trail Glove 7 is Merrell's offering for minimalist runners looking for a zero-drop trail shoe with light protection. With a 14 mm FloatPro™ midsole and a 0 mm drop, it keeps the barefoot philosophy of the Trail Glove line while offering some cushioning for uneven terrain. Its launch price makes it a relatively affordable option in the minimalist segment, drawing on the prestige Merrell built up in earlier times, although some veteran runners will miss more premium materials. It is a solid choice for those getting started with minimalism or looking for a versatile shoe for light trail running and hiking.
The breathable mesh upper is surprisingly durable according to tests, although the fit is noticeably narrow, especially around the toes. If you come from brands such as Altra or Vivobarefoot, the Trail Glove 7 will feel narrow. The traditional lacing system ensures a personalised fit, and the reinforced toe protects against loose rocks and roots you may come across on the way without adding bulk. The integrated bootie-style tongue improves comfort and reduces pressure points.
The minimalist midsole puts ground feel ahead of cushioning, exactly what a barefoot runner is after. The Vibram™ outsole offers competent grip on dry, hard-packed trails, although the rubber shows disappointing durability and is also a magnet for small pebbles. It is surprising that the Italian brand lends itself to products with such poor results, which can only erode its (well-earned) prestige. The Speedgoat 7 has a 5 mm drop and much more cushioning, but is a good entry point towards a minimalist transition; the Helios 3 is also more cushioned, but here the drop comes down to 4 mm. Both have a far better outsole than the Trail Glove 7. Ideal for runners with narrow feet looking for a versatile barefoot shoe for short and medium distances. Incomprehensibly, there is also a waterproof version (Gore-Tex™) with the same outsole. What a way to lose your bearings, Merrell.
