Description
The Saucony Peregrine 16 debuts a collaboration with Vibram (yes, our eyes light up too) and adds 5 mm of stack height over the Peregrine 15, reaching 33 mm at the heel and 29 mm at the forefoot (a 4 mm drop, in case anyone gets lost). The new PWRRUN foam blend offers more cushioning without adding too much weight (283 g for men), keeping the fairly agile character that made this line famous. With Vibram MegaGrip rubber on a Peregrine for the first time, traction takes a big step up on wet rock, mud and technical terrain, not to mention the commercial boost from the prestige of the Italian outsole brand. The recycled abrasion-resistant mesh upper is up to 400% more durable according to Saucony (perhaps they went a bit overboard there), with reinforcements at the toe and sides to withstand wear when flying along demanding trails. The Peregrine 16 is a very competitive option against rivals such as the Speedgoat 7 or the Sense Ride 4.
The changes compared with previous versions of the popular Peregrine line are significant. The thicker midsole gives more protection over long distances, although talking about ground feel does not make much sense with the protective plate. The reinforced mesh upper improves durability, one of the weak points of previous generations. The fit keeps the Saucony stamp: heel and midfoot well held, with a slightly roomier toe box to allow natural expansion on technical descents.
In the mountains, the Peregrine 16 shines on varied terrain: from fast trails to technical sections with roots and rocks. The 4 mm Vibram MegaGrip lugs offer exceptional grip in the wet without being excessive for a mix of road and trail. The Rock Guard plate protects against sharp impacts without stiffening the ride too much, although it has some effect. Ideal for runners looking for a versatile shoe: fast on the climbs, secure on the descents and comfortable over medium to long distances. Mind you: no Vibram lug will save you from a twisted ankle, but at least you will have one less excuse to cling to when things do not go as planned.
