Description
The Merrell MTL SpeedArc Peak is Merrell's first carbon-plated trail shoe, a unisex model that came out of the Merrell Test Lab after several years of development, designed for running fast on forest tracks, trails and moderately technical terrain. It packs the latest technology (a FlexPlate™ carbon plate, Matryx® mesh and more), but the price (literally) to be paid looks very high, at least at launch. Perhaps it is an attempt by the brand to reposition itself in the market after a few years adrift by returning to its identity: functional, quality shoes, although it is true that it sits at the opposite extreme from the minimalist Trail Glove 8.
The upper is made of Matryx® fabric with Kevlar threads, a single light layer that is very resistant to abrasion, with breathable mesh on the sides and two TPU overlays running from the toe down both sides. It is a shoe built to cope well with the usual scrapes against branches or rocks. The fit feels narrow and the lockdown is firm in the midfoot, and the front ends in a point, which can become a problem for wide feet. Curious, because Merrell used to pay attention to these things, and other brands such as Altra are eating its lunch, something potential users appreciate.
The midsole is the most interesting part: three layers with FloatPro™ (TPEE) at the base, a second layer of FloatPro™ with PEBA on top and a three-quarter-length FlexPlate™ carbon plate sandwiched between them. The plate does not reach the heel, which stays softer and more stable, pushing propulsion forward without the unruliness of other rigid plates on loose rock. With 30 mm at the heel, 24 mm at the forefoot and a 6 mm drop, the geometry is moderate and the heel-to-toe transition is smooth. The impressive Vibram® Megagrip Elite outsole with 4 mm butterfly-shaped lugs grips more than enough on wet and dry ground; on the other hand, on very technical descents and off-trail the platform falls short and can feel less stable. Ideal for runners with deep pockets who want a racing shoe for fast trails and forest tracks in races of up to 50 km.
