Hoka Mafate 5
The Hoka Mafate 5 is a neutral trail running shoe.

Description

The Hoka One One Mafate 5 represents the evolution of the Mafate line towards longer distances and moderate paces, dropping "Speed" from the name to reflect its focus on maximum cushioning and durability rather than pure speed, although it never fooled anyone. For shorter adventures that need a bit more responsiveness there is the Speedgoat 7, which is not exactly a shoe for flying low in the mountains either, as the Zinal 3 might be, but then they are the ones who choose the names.

The warp-knit mesh upper with an anti-tear treatment is billed as durable yet breathable, with a series of TPU overlays that provide structure and anchor points for gaiters. The fit is true to size, with a roomier last than most Hokas, especially in the toe box. The tongue is short, thin and not gusseted, which can cause discomfort if it is not adjusted properly, not so much because of awkward creases but because it can let in dust and those annoying little stones. The build is robust (it does feel a bit like a tank), designed to withstand the rigours of ultramarathons.

The chunky midsole (44 mm of stack height at the heel, quite dizzying) incorporates the new Rocker Integrity technology with a flexible TPU plate in the forefoot to keep transitions smooth over long distances. The dual-density foam combines a softer top layer with a firmer EVA base, aiming to improve responsiveness with pleasant cushioning. The Vibram Megagrip rubber outsole with 5 mm lugs provides exceptional traction on varied terrain, and seeing the iconic yellow octagon on the outsole really inspires confidence.
