Description
The Altra Olympus 6 is the brand's maximum cushioning trail shoe. With a 35 mm stack height and a 0 mm drop (to nobody's surprise, least of all the brand's fans), it offers full protection for long distances on more or less technical terrain. Its launch price is relatively high and places it in the premium segment, but for those looking for extreme comfort in ultra distances, it can be a good option. The quality of the materials, the improved durability and the Vibram Megagrip outsole justify the investment, or at least make it look worthwhile. Compared with other trail shoes on the market, it stands out for its combination of generous cushioning and exceptional traction on all kinds of surfaces, plus the zero drop magnet, where it has no rival.
The perforated mesh upper with 360-degree reinforcements offers improved durability over the Olympus 5. The FootShape™ toe box allows natural splay, crucial when feet swell on long days of more than 8 hours. The Achilles Pillow heel padding is generous, although some runners complain of blisters while getting used to it, but this usually sorts itself out after the first 50 km and a plaster fixes it easily. The padded tongue and lacing system ensure a firm fit without pressure points, even with thick winter socks.
The midsole of the Olympus 6 offers maximum cushioning to absorb impacts on rocky technical terrain and roots. Ideal for ultramarathons, long-distance hiking, thru-hiking and trail recovery runs. The prestigious Vibram Megagrip outsole with 4 mm lugs provides exceptional traction in wet and dry conditions, mud and wet rock, the holy grail of outsoles. For anyone looking for something lighter for short, fast races, the Hoka Speedgoat 7 is nimbler and more responsive. For mixed terrain with more road, the Akasha II offers more versatility. The Peregrine 16 is another responsive option for mid distances. Indeed, with 35 mm of midsole there is no way to "feel" the ground; it is like running on clouds, but watch out for sprained ankles on very fast technical descents.
