Description
With the Hoka Mach 7 the American brand refines its daily trainer for neutral runners who put lightness and responsiveness first. The new version cuts weight compared with the Mach 6 (237 g in US size 9 / EU 42) while keeping the supercritical EVA foam, which offers a notable combination: consistent cushioning with quick transitions. That approach keeps it competitive against rivals such as the New Balance FuelCell Rebel v5 or the Adidas Adizero Boston 12. Compared with other daily trainers in the segment, its launch price makes it a competitive option, although cheap it certainly is not. Mind you, it is no entry-level bargain, but for anyone looking for versatility in a single shoe, it can be an interesting addition to a rotation without the shoe cupboard looking like a flea market.
Compared with its predecessor, the Mach 6, the changes are mainly cosmetic and in the outsole, apart from the expected price rise. The creel jacquard mesh upper improves breathability and offers a more forgiving fit, although runners with wide feet should consider the wide sizes available. The slightly shorter tongue and more flexible heel counter improve comfort without compromising hold. Some users find the fit still a little narrow in the forefoot.
The Mach 7 midsole keeps the single-density supercritical EVA foam, which gives a slightly firmer ride than the Mach 6, with a subtle bounce that propels each stride. The official 5 mm drop ensures smooth transitions for midfoot and forefoot strikers, in a shoe designed for quality sessions and races that are not too long. The big news is the outsole: sticky rubber in the forefoot and Durabrasion at the heel, improving traction and durability over previous versions. Ideal for daily training, intervals, fartleks and runs up to the half marathon. A word of warning: it is not the best shoe for very easy recovery runs, as its responsive character invites you to push the pace. Spoiler: no shoe will improve your VO2 max on its own, but the Mach 7 makes every mile feel lighter.
