Description
The Brooks Hyperion Max 3 is the American brand's take on the daily training super shoe, a segment where it had not made much of a mark until now. After two editions that promised "max" but never quite delivered it, the third version takes a decisive leap: it debuts PEBA-based DNA Gold foam in the top layer of the midsole, adds 10 mm of stack height and sits squarely alongside rivals such as the Saucony Endorphin Speed 5, but with a taller profile. Within the Brooks range it sits above the Launch 12 in cushioning and below the Hyperion Elite 5 in racing character, filling a clear gap for long runs and controlled paces.
The most notable change from the Hyperion Max 2 is in the midsole: Brooks keeps the DNA Flash v2 base in contact with the ground for stability and adds the DNA Gold layer right underfoot, a combination that delivers more bounce without entirely losing impact control at each landing. The SpeedVault polyamide plate and RapidRoll geometry help drive the transition, although so much height raises some doubts about the stability it may cost. The upper is a premium knit with a sock-like fit, snugger and with less toe box volume than previous versions, while the asymmetric tongue and padded heel (along with the handy loop-shaped pull tab) improve step-in comfort.
With a 6 mm heel-to-toe drop and geometry built for a quick transition through the stride, the Hyperion Max 3 shines on long runs at a controlled pace and on quality days. The RoadTack rubber outsole offers reasonable durability on tarmac, although the weight is more noticeable than in a traditional racer. For anyone who wants a daily trainer with the soul of a super shoe, it is a serious option.
