Description
The Altra Timp 6 arrives as the evolution the line needed: a trail shoe for neutral runners looking for generous cushioning without giving up the zero-drop feel, a feature that takes some time to adapt to. With a generous 30 mm midsole where the EGO MAX compound takes centre stage, it offers a floating ride that eats up the miles on trails and fairly technical terrain. Its new Vibram MegaGrip outsole with redesigned lugs improves grip on mixed terrain, a guarantee that takes the performance of the Timp 6 to the next level. Mind you: it is not an entry-level bargain, but it can be a great deal for anyone looking for versatility in a single pair.
Compared with previous versions, the Timp 6 debuts a more flexible upper with fewer overlays in the midfoot, solving the stiffness some runners complained about. The forefoot keeps the trademark Altra FootShape™, although slightly narrower than the Lone Peak 9. The semi-integrated lacing system ensures a secure fit without pressure points, while the padded tongue improves comfort on technical descents, where there are always more sudden movements.
The EGO MAX midsole provides some bounce and enough cushioning for long runs and short ultras. Ideal for runners coming from the Lone Peak 9 who want more protection, or from the Olympus 6 who prefer something more agile. Compared with rivals such as the Cascadia 19, the Timp 6 goes for a more natural ride thanks to its zero drop. As for the Vibram MegaGrip outsole, outsoles from the prestigious Italian brand are increasingly common, so the shoes that do not have one almost stand out more.
