Altra Lone Peak 8

The Altra Lone Peak 8 is the previous generation of Altra's most iconic trail shoe, known for its extra-wide toe box that lets the toes splay naturally. With 25 mm of stack height at both heel and forefoot (the brand's trademark zero drop), the Lone Peak 8 offers a natural, stable ride that mimics barefoot movement. The 5 mm multidirectional MaxTrac lugs provide traction on varied trails, while the Stone Guard plate protects against sharp impacts. The ripstop mesh upper improves durability over previous versions. At its launch price, the Lone Peak 8 competes directly with the Speedgoat 7 and the Cascadia 19 as a versatile shoe for hiking and trail running.

The Lone Peak 8 keeps the brand's hallmarks: zero drop and the wide FootShape™ fit. The Altra EGO foam midsole offers moderate cushioning that puts ground feel ahead of maximum protection. The ripstop mesh upper is more abrasion-resistant than previous generations, although it is still quite breathable. The side reinforcements at the toe improve durability. The integrated Gaiter Trap system makes it easy to use short gaiters without extra stitching, which is always welcome.

On the trails, the Lone Peak 8 shines on technical paths, long distances and dry conditions thanks to its excellent drainage. The 5 mm lugs offer reliable grip on dirt and dry rock, although the MaxTrac rubber has a reputation for wearing relatively quickly (250 to 400 km depending on use and the runner's weight) and wet grip is limited, to put it mildly. Ideal for runners looking for ground feel, stability and comfort over long distances. It bears repeating that zero drop is not for everyone: if you come from shoes with an 8 to 10 mm drop, there is a transition period that your calves will notice.
