Altra Experience Wild 3

The Altra Experience Wild 3 is a trail shoe for neutral runners who want a wide fit, a low drop and a natural stride without giving up some cushioning. As part of the Altra "Experience" line, it is worth pointing out that the drop is not zero but 4 mm, a feature that eases the transition and widens the sales potential of the shoe itself. Beyond the drop, within the Altra range it is a lighter, more versatile option than the Lone Peak 9, without reaching the maximum protection of the Olympus 6. Compared with its predecessor, the Experience Wild 2, the main change is in the midsole: it now debuts the EGO P35 compound, softer and more responsive than the previous foam, something marketing has been telling us since time immemorial: yes, this new detergent washes whiter.

The breathable mesh upper has a more open weave than the Experience Flow 2, gaining durability and breathability for use beyond the road. The reinforced toe bumper protects the toes from knocks against stones along the way, and the rear tab (GaiterTrap™) not only makes it quick to put on but also makes gaiters easy to use. The fit follows the Altra FootShape™ Standard philosophy: room for the toes without losing hold in the midfoot. Some testers report the foot sliding forward and back on very technical terrain, so runners with narrow feet or who head out on very aggressive runs will need to lace up well and trust the padded tongue to do its job.

Underfoot, the Altra EGO P35 midsole offers a soft feel with a touch of responsiveness, combined with slightly aggressive geometry that helps the transition. It has a relatively tall stack height, and the 4 mm heel-to-toe drop moves it away from the brand's traditional "zero drop", making it more accessible for those who want a more natural stride but find no drop at all too radical. The "normal" version (without the plus) comes with a MaxTrac outsole whose 4 mm lugs cover much of the surface and work well on hard-packed trails, dirt and soft snow; for those who prioritise maximum grip on wet rock, Altra offers the Experience Wild 3+ with a Vibram® Megagrip outsole, which is becoming a bare minimum at this point.
