Altra Escalante Racer 2

The Altra Escalante Racer 2 is one of the few racers that keeps a zero drop in a market dominated by carbon plates and oversized stacks. With 22 mm of stack height at both heel and forefoot, it offers a natural ride that puts ground feel ahead of maximum protection. The ultralight mesh upper is extremely breathable, so much so that you can see your sock through the holes, something to bear in mind when running somewhere a bit dusty. The trademark Altra FootShape™ fit gives the toes room, although runners with narrow feet may notice some looseness. The Escalante Racer 2 competes directly with the Adidas Adizero Adios 9, both being among the most minimalist racers on the market today.

The Altra EGO foam midsole (TPU with an EVA layer) offers good responsiveness and has a reputation for being firm, ideal for those coming from minimalism or looking to transition from zero-drop shoes. The outsole has a segmented design with rubber pods that allow natural flexibility through the stride. Reflective details on the tongue and heel improve visibility in low light. The ankle padding is minimal and its shape somewhat peculiar, putting weight savings ahead of comfort, and this is no small detail: the author of this review had real problems with it and ended up getting rid of the shoe.

On the track and road, the Escalante Racer 2 shines over short and mid distances (5K to the half marathon) for runners who value a connection with the ground. Without a carbon plate it is less propulsive than modern racers, but more versatile for fast training paces. The outsole rubber offers adequate traction in the dry, although it may fall short in the wet, perhaps offset because it encourages a forefoot strike (midfoot at worst) and the momentum of the body reduces the chance of slipping. Ideal for runners with wide feet looking for a minimalist racer without giving up zero drop.
