Description
The Salomon Ultra Glide 4 is the fourth iteration of Salomon's most cushioned shoe, designed for runners who want comfort over long distances on mountain terrain. With 41 mm of stack height at the heel and 35 mm at the forefoot (a 6 mm drop, in case the maths fails), it offers a generous platform while keeping the weight relatively in check, so it does not become an unmanageable tank that puts you off going for a run. Its somewhat high price does not rule it out as a competitive option in the maximum-cushioning trail segment, as it plays the card of the French brand's (well-deserved) prestige, an interesting choice considering the versatility it offers for long training runs and ultras on terrain that is not too technical.
The breathable mesh upper provides a comfortable fit that is roomy in the forefoot, with normal volume at the heel and midfoot. Salomon's iconic Quicklace™ system ensures a secure fit without pressure points, certainly one of the features that tip the balance in its favour against rivals. The padded tongue and side overlays wrap the foot pleasantly without sacrificing breathability, although some users find it holds some heat and moisture in warm conditions; you cannot have everything.
The OptiFoam midsole delivers notable energy return for a shoe of this volume, with a very well executed rocker that makes long runs easier. The ContaGrip outsole with 4.5 mm lugs provides competent traction on gravel, hardpacked dirt and wet tarmac, although it does not stand out on wet rock or deep mud. Ideal for runners who put comfort first over ultra distances and varied terrain. For more grip on technical terrain, the Speedcross 6 offers better traction. For lighter, faster trail running, the Challenger 8 is more versatile. For abundant cushioning on more technical trails, the Speedgoat 7 has better grip.
