Description
The New Balance SuperComp Rebel is the new darling of the Boston brand's SuperComp (SC) family: a plated lightweight trainer with 40 mm of Infinion foam (debuted in the 1080 v15) and a weight close to that of a racer. New Balance describes it as "running like it is race day, any day", an elegant way of saying it aims to fill the gap between the traditional FuelCell Rebel v5 and race-day super shoes such as the SuperComp Elite v6.
The change from the classic Rebel is radical: it is no longer a low, simple shoe (in the sense of "plain"), but a super shoe with a maximalist midsole, a carbon-reinforced Pebax plate and Energy Arc technology. The FantomFit upper is light and breathable, with the tongue stitched to the sides to prevent slipping, giving a fairly snug fit. The fit is comfortable for standard feet, although those with a high instep or wide feet should try it on in a shop before paying the asking price, because it is not cheap.
On the run, the SC Rebel feels cushioned and responsive at the same time, with a pronounced rocker that helps it roll along without forcing. The official drop is 4 mm, a geometry designed for midfoot and forefoot strikers looking for quick transitions. It works especially well for intervals and steady runs, although such a high profile could cause stability issues. The outsole prioritises low weight and is one of those that seems to vanish just by looking at it, so it is best kept for tarmac to avoid unnecessary wear.
