Description
The New Balance FuelCell Rebel v5 arrives as the most polished evolution of NB's rebel line, designed for neutral runners looking for a versatile shoe that can do it all: from easy runs to intervals and steady paces. Weighing 225 g (US 9 / EU 42.5) and with a PEBA+EVA FuelCell foam that feels soft without being mushy, it is an interesting alternative to rivals such as the Hoka Mach 7, against which it has a slightly wider forefoot, a touch softer cushioning and, although this is subjective, a more attractive design, especially in that red and black combination.
Compared with its predecessor, the Rebel v4, the changes are significant where it matters most: the tongue is now the right length (goodbye to blisters on the instep), the heel collar is better padded and the midsole gains 1 mm of height (big deal) while keeping the same light feel. The engineered mesh upper is sturdier and the forefoot fit is more generous, ideal for feet that need room without losing a good fit. As I said, I am delighted on that front.
The midsole of the Rebel v5 stands out for its supercritical FuelCell foam, which offers soft cushioning, perhaps too soft, with acceptable energy return, a step below the Saucony Endorphin Speed 5 with its nylon plate. The 6 mm drop ensures natural transitions for midfoot and forefoot strikers. The outsole, with partial rubber coverage in high-wear zones, puts weight saving before extreme durability. Ideal for daily training, steady runs and races up to the half marathon. Possibly one of the best-looking shoes I have ever owned, and it works pretty well.
