New Balance Fresh Foam X 880 v15

The New Balance Fresh Foam X 880 v15 is New Balance's workhorse for neutral runners, one of the longest-running daily trainers on the market and the most cushioned in its history. The American brand has raised the midsole to 40.5 mm at the heel (34.5 at the forefoot) and lowered the drop to 6 mm, bringing it into maximum cushioning territory with a firm, stable ride, as far as that very high profile allows. In New Balance's road range it sits in the shadow of the well-known 1080 v15, the slightly softer and more premium flagship (above all for its attention to detail and innovative materials), while the Fresh Foam X 860 v15 is its equivalent for overpronators, the line's version with pronation support.

Compared with its predecessor, the 880 v14, the extra midsole foam is the most striking change, along with a wider platform, a more pronounced geometry for a smooth transition and a roomier, more breathable synthetic mesh upper that makes the fit easier, where the oversized "N" on the side catches the eye, a matter of fashion. As usual, it is available in standard and extra-wide versions, which are not usually stocked as widely as the standard one. There are also versions with the well-known waterproof Gore-Tex® membrane for protection in difficult weather conditions.

The Fresh Foam X midsole is not the newest material (that would be the Infinion in the 1080 v15), but it offers generous cushioning that protects on long runs without losing stability in transitions, although it is not a shoe for running fast. With a 6 mm drop and a geometry marked by the forefoot rocker that propels each stride, it is designed for daily runs, long runs and easy paces, ideal for runners who want plenty of cushioning without getting caught up in the latest materials, at a relatively moderate price.
