The New Balance Fresh Foam X 1080 v14 is the premium daily trainer for neutral runners who put comfort first on every mile, but it shows clear signs of fatigue because it does not adapt well to the times: it is heavier than its predecessor, and the Fresh Foam X compound (once a novelty that took you to another level) does not offer the response of other technologies such as FuelCell, which shines in other models from the American brand's range such as the excellent lightweight trainer FuelCell Rebel v5. In short, it is time for the R&D department to give the concept a fresh twist.

The engineered mesh upper is supposedly more breathable than in previous versions, although the oversized logo covers almost the whole outer side, a matter of fashion. It has a true-to-size fit and a medium last that wraps the foot without pressure points. The padded tongue and traditional laces allow a precise fit, while the toe box leaves enough room for the toes to move naturally on long runs. The construction is robust and looks a little overdone, almost cosy, raising serious doubts about heat dissipation.

The Fresh Foam X midsole offers a comfortable ride with a rather soft feel and a pronounced rocker that eases transitions, thanks to the 6 mm drop and a classic geometry aimed at heel strikers. The rubber outsole covers the high-wear areas, ensuring durability without adding unnecessary weight. In short, the 1080 v14 is the logical evolution of one of the most established lines on the market, so logical that rivals are overtaking it on the inside, making it an ideal candidate for those who are happy with previous versions and for whom changes (or rather bad news in the form of surprises) are most unwelcome.
