Description
The Hoka One One Speedgoat 7 returns to its roots as the benchmark for long-distance trail. After a somewhat disappointing sixth version, Hoka gets back on track with a supercritical EVA midsole (more responsive and durable than traditional EVA) that keeps the line's trademark protection without feeling soft or unstable. The recycled RPET woven mesh upper with welded overlays significantly improves fit and durability over previous editions. With the legendary 5 mm Vibram Megagrip lugs, the Speedgoat 7 is ideal for ultra distances, technical terrain and runners looking for maximum cushioning without sacrificing traction.
The most important evolution is in the midsole: the nitrogen-injected supercritical EVA offers more energy return and keeps its properties for more miles than conventional EVA, which used to flatten out after 500 km. With 38 mm at the heel and 33 mm at the forefoot (the brand's trademark 5 mm drop), the stack height is generous but the firmness of the compound provides stability on uneven terrain. Compared with the Speedgoat 5, it gains in midsole durability and quality of fit; against rivals such as the Salomon Sense Ride 4, it offers more cushioning but less ground feel.
In the mountains, the Speedgoat 7 shines over long distances and varied terrain. The combination of protective cushioning and Vibram Megagrip traction makes it exceptional on technical descents, wet rocks and uneven trails. The upper improves the fit over previous versions, although some runners will need to go up half a size because of the somewhat narrow toe box. It is not the most agile shoe for fast paces or very technical terrain, but as a tool for racking up the miles with fresh legs, it is hard to beat. Durability is remarkable: welded overlays on the upper, a Vibram outsole of proven longevity and a midsole that does not lose its properties prematurely. Compared with the Nike Pegasus Trail 3, it gains in protection and traction but gives up some versatility for mixed road and trail use.
