Hoka Bondi 9

The Hoka Bondi 9 redefines what a maximum-cushioning shoe means. With a revamped supercritical EVA midsole (lighter and more responsive than traditional EVA), the Bondi 9 offers a more dynamic and versatile ride than its predecessors. The breathable woven mesh upper and moulded collar provide a secure, comfortable fit, while the MetaRocker geometry (a brand hallmark) eases smooth heel-to-toe transitions. Ideal for recovery runs, long runs and runners who prioritise joint protection without completely giving up responsiveness.

The supercritical EVA midsole is a significant change from previous editions, resulting in a lighter shoe with more energy return, although it is no carbon-plated super shoe. The upper is more breathable and the moulded collar gives a more secure fit at the back. With 43 mm of stack height at the heel and 38 mm at the forefoot (a 5 mm drop, another brand hallmark), it keeps the line's characteristic maximalism but with a more balanced feel. Against rivals such as the Asics Gel Nimbus 27, the Bondi 9 offers a firmer, more responsive ride; compared with the Hoka Clifton 10, it gains in cushioning and protection but gives up some versatility for varied paces.

Out on the road, the Bondi 9 shines on easy runs and recovery miles. The combination of supercritical EVA and MetaRocker gives a fluid transition with exceptional joint protection. It is not a shoe for fast paces, as its height and very cushioned character make it less agile for changes of pace, but as a tool for racking up the miles in comfort, it is hard to beat. Stability is remarkable for a shoe with such a high profile, thanks to the reinforced sidewalls and wide base. The fit is snugger than in previous editions, especially in the midfoot. Outsole durability is adequate, with rubber in key areas. Compared with the Nike Vomero 18, it gains in midsole height but gives up some versatility, although the two are almost level on the variety of colourways.
