Description
Thankfully, the Brooks Ghost 18 brings no revolution over its predecessor, the Ghost 17, and keeps the DNA LOFT v3 midsole, which provides soft, balanced cushioning that absorbs impact without losing responsiveness. It is all relative, and Brooks can be expected to offer more responsive foams in line with what the market demands, although runners after that will be looking more at a lightweight trainer such as the Launch 12.
The big news in the Ghost 18 is a revamped multi-layer upper in soft, fine knit which, together with a new tongue (not stitched to the sides), feels more comfortable, especially in terms of touch and ventilation, although that remains to be checked in person once the weather warms up. The familiar 10 mm drop and generous cushioning complete a package that will not make you fall in love but delivers what it promises, which makes it a safe buy.
Out on the road, the Ghost 18 shines on easy runs and long runs. The combination of DNA LOFT v3 and a balanced design gives a smooth ride that invites you to rack up the miles without too much fatigue. It is protective enough for hard surfaces yet stable enough for moderate paces, nothing crazy. The fit is secure in the midfoot and roomy in the toe box, suitable for wide feet, although the American brand usually offers several widths for its loyal customers. Outsole durability is excellent thanks to the hard-wearing rubber. The weight perhaps feels a touch excessive, somewhat above the average for its category and definitely not in line with the market trend, but the Ghost 18 is clearly an "old school" shoe and that may well be the secret of its success.
