Description
The Asics Novablast 5 is the fifth iteration of the successful Asics daily training line, launched in December 2024. This version introduces the new full-length FF Blast Max midsole, which offers energy return just a touch below top-of-the-range carbon-plated shoes and a trampoline feel that makes it fun and versatile for easy runs, long runs and even progression runs, hence its huge popularity. With a 41 mm stack height at the heel and 33 mm at the forefoot (an 8 mm drop, in case anyone was struggling with the maths), it offers maximum cushioning without sacrificing (too much) agility. Ideal for neutral runners looking for comfort with a bit of responsiveness in their everyday shoe.
The key evolution compared with the Novablast 3 and Novablast 4 is the new FF Blast Max foam, lighter and with greater energy return, the eternal promises of marketing teams. The engineered jacquard mesh upper is more breathable and lighter, with a winged tongue that improves the fit. Compared with rivals such as the Hoka Clifton 10, it gains in responsiveness and fun; against the Saucony Triumph 22, it offers more cushioning and a softer ride.
Out on the road, the Novablast 5 shines for its versatility, within limits, of course. The combination of FF Blast Max and the well-judged rocker geometry makes for smooth heel-to-toe transitions, while the AHAR LO outsole in strategic wear zones provides average durability, nothing to get excited about. It is not the best option for very fast paces or all-out races, as the soft foam can feel less stable, but as a tool for piling up kilometres with comfort and fun, it is hard to beat. The fit is true to size, with a slightly wide midfoot. Compared with the hugely popular Nike Air Zoom Pegasus 41, it gains in cushioning and energy return but gives up some stability for changes of pace. Almost a matter of taste, and of space in the shoe cupboard for a wider rotation.
