Asics Gel Kayano 27

It is important to note that the longest and more expensive saga from Asics released another edition, the Asics Gel Kayano 27. Not so long ago, a running shoe with pronation support with top cushioning was of synonym for something extraordinary big, stiff and ugly, something pretty similar to an orthopedic shoe which really didn't encourage to run. But things change over time and in this case definitely for the better. In 2021 it is not that easy to distinguish current Kayano 27 from a rider like Asics Gel Cumulus 22 and one needs to put attention to spot the differences. What has not changed is the high probability to be true if Gel Kayano 27 is recommended to someone looking for really comfortable running shoe with pronation support. Price tag has not changed either, it has been always on top of the market but after 27 editions it is clear that the Kayano is worth the money.

People from Asics have already mastered how to improve running shoes adding a bit of technology here and there to satisfy loyal but demanding customers. Although there are no major changes compared to its predecessor Gel Kayano 26, there are always some details that could justify the typical yearly update. In this case, upper features a new and more breathable "Jacquard" mesh which looks really clean with just termofused logo strategically placed on both sides for better fit. Also the external plastic piece in the heel has been redesigned for enhanced support.

It is interesting that in current Asics Gel Kayano 27 the rear Gel® unit has been reconfigured again for improved performance and this has also an impact on how much is visible from outside. It keeps the midsole configuration with full length FlyteFoam Propel on top with an embedded (and not visible from outside) Gel® in the forefoot. Regarding progressive pronation support, typical dual density foam (DuoMax™) is combined with renovated plastic piece in midsole (officially named Space Trusstic™ and varies depending on gender) which adds stiffness to the whole. Almost nothing to say about outsole design (unlike its counterpart for neutral runners Gel Nimbus 22) that keeps not only its three big flex grooves in the forefoot for smoother transition but also more robust rubber (AHAR+) in most exposed areas for increased durability.
