Asics Gel Cumulus 27
The Asics Gel Cumulus 27 is a neutral cushioned running shoe.

Description

The Asics Gel Cumulus 27 arrives as the latest update of a line that has spent decades as the reliable choice for neutral runners who are not after fireworks, just trouble-free kilometres. Its launch price makes it a competitive offer against rivals such as the Gel Nimbus 27 (higher range, more cushioning) or the Novablast 5 (more fun, less traditional). The Cumulus has never tried to revolutionise anything: it is the Toyota Corolla of running shoes, and that has its value.

The jacquard mesh upper improves breathability over earlier versions, with a lacing system that ensures a secure fit without pressure points, although that depends on how tightly you tie your laces. The new heel pull tab makes it easier to put on, a small detail you appreciate every morning. The padded tongue prevents slipping. Nothing revolutionary, but it works.

The midsole combines FlyteFoam with gel in the heel for cushioning that puts comfort before responsiveness, although it is not a top-of-the-range shoe for cushioning, more of an easy-run shoe. With an 8 mm drop and a moderate weight, it is a daily trainer that does not shy away from faster paces, but it is not a racer either. The AHAR+ outsole ensures durability without frills. It is the typical mid-range shoe that serves for many things, not especially expensive (nor cheap), from a well-known brand, and it holds its own against icons such as the Saucony Ride 18 or the Pegasus 41. An option that rarely goes wrong but leaves you wondering whether there could be something better.
