Description
The Altra Lone Peak 9 is the latest evolution of the American brand's most iconic trail shoe, known for its extra-wide toe box that lets the toes splay naturally. With 25 mm of stack height at both heel and forefoot (the brand's trademark 0 mm drop), the Lone Peak 9 offers a natural, stable ride that mimics barefoot movement. The 5 mm multidirectional lugs provide aggressive traction on varied trails, while the Stone Guard plate protects against sharp impacts, or at least almost all of them. The breathable mesh upper with an integrated Gaiter Trap system makes short gaiters easy to use. In its price range, the Lone Peak 9 competes directly with the Speedgoat 7 and the Sense Ride 4 as a versatile shoe for hiking and trail running.
Compared with earlier versions, the Lone Peak 9 keeps the brand's hallmarks: zero drop and a wide fit. The proprietary foam midsole offers moderate cushioning that prioritises ground feel over maximum protection. The fine-mesh upper keeps sand and mud out while allowing excellent ventilation. Side reinforcements at the toe improve durability over earlier generations.
In the mountains, the Lone Peak 9 shines on technical trails, long distances and wet conditions thanks to its excellent drainage. The 5 mm lugs offer reliable grip on dirt and dry rock, although several users report that the rubber wears relatively quickly (250–400 km depending on use and runner weight), so it is worth bearing in mind. Ideal for runners looking for ground feel, stability and comfort over long distances. Be careful, though: zero drop is not for everyone, especially for those coming from shoes with an 8–10 mm drop. There is always a transition period that is not easy, or your calves will make you pay for it.
