Altra Escalante 4

The Altra Escalante 4 is the latest iteration of the most versatile daily running shoe from Altra, designed for comfortable training and faster paces. With 24 mm of stack height at both heel and forefoot (the brand's trademark 0 mm drop), it offers a natural ride that prioritises ground feel. The engineered mesh upper improves breathability and fit over earlier generations, with a traditional lacing system that secures the foot without pressure points. The Altra EGO MAX foam midsole provides soft cushioning with good energy return. Given its features, the Escalante 4 competes directly with the Mach 7 and the Endorphin Speed 5 as a versatile shoe for daily runs and intervals.

The Escalante 4 keeps the brand's hallmarks: zero drop and a wide FootShape™ fit that lets the toes splay naturally. The updated midsole offers more cushioning than the previous generation without sacrificing the ground feel typical of the Escalante range. The variable-porosity mesh upper keeps excellent ventilation while providing hold in the midfoot. Side reinforcements at the toe improve durability. On the road, the Escalante 4 shines on easy runs, active recovery and technique sessions. Without a carbon plate it is less responsive than racing shoes, but more versatile for everyday use. The outsole with an InnerFlex pattern allows natural flexibility through the stride, at least much more natural than a carbon fibre plate that launches you into the next stride with less effort. The rubber offers adequate traction in dry and wet conditions, although it can wear with heavy use (400–600 km depending on weight and running style).
